Play Therapy
We are delighted to inform you that we have student Play Therapist
in our Ballywaltrim Centre this year. She will join our team for the next few
months where she will be able to take children on a one-to-one basis for Play
Therapy.
We
have been lucky for the past few years to have a Play Therapist in our Greenpark
Rd Centre and it has really benefited and supported the children and the families.
What is Play Therapy
Children
may experience problems with feelings or behaviours, Play therapy provides a child
with an opportunity to ‘play out’ their thoughts, feelings and problems.
Play
permits the child to communicate with adults nonverbally, symbolically, and in
an action-oriented manner. Play Therapists use approaches, interventions,
media, and activities that are appropriate to the age and developmental stage
of the client.
Children
enter into a dynamic therapeutic relationship with the therapist that enables
them to express themselves, explore and make sense of the world in which they
live, and resolve any difficult or painful experiences through the medium of
play.
Any
child can benefit from play therapy. It promotes self-confidence, imagination,
creativity, concentration, communication, problem-solving skills, self-esteem
and most importantly happiness in the child. Play Therapy is suitable for
children as young as two to three years old and there is no upper age limit.
Play
therapy is relationship based – the power of the therapy comes from the
strength of the relationship between the Play Therapist and the child.

Our
Team Leaders Joan Quinn and Tracie O’Toole will be in contact with families
over the next week to offer out the first sessions for children who they feel
may benefit from this service.
As
parents you meet with Aoife, Play Therapist and she will go more into depth on
what Play Therapy is and how it works. These sessions will be take place during
your child’s time with us in the centre in our After-School room downstairs.
If
you are offered sessions but do not want to avail of them that is no problem,
you can just let Tracie or Joan know and they can move to the next child on the
list.
We
are hoping for the parents to meet with Aoife next week and for the sessions
with the children to begin after our Halloween Break.
If
you have any questions, please do not hesitate to link in with one of the Team Leaders
or you can call me on the number above.
Kind
Regards
Lisa Kearns
Manager
